Griffin Tabbed Player of the Week Twice
St. Mary's City, Md. - Senior guard Camontae Griffin (Baltimore, Md./Dunbar) was selected by both the Capital Athletic Conference and PrestoSports/Pride of Maryland as the player of the week for the week ending November 22 after Griffin registered a record-setting weekend in leading No. 20 St. Mary's College of Maryland to its second consecutive title in the Pride of Maryland Championship presented by M&T Bank.
The Seahawks (3-0) posted an 83-56 win at McDaniel College in first round action and punched their ticket to the championship game with a 78-76 win over conference foe, Salisbury University, in the semifinals. St. Mary's then posted an 89-77 triumph over CAC rival Hood College in the championship game for its second straight title.
Griffin poured in a school, career, and tournament record 51 points in leading St. Mary's to its second consecutive Pride of Maryland title. Repeating as the tournament MVP, he set tournament records for most points in a tournament (78), most points in a game (51), and most points in a half (27) as well as establishing tournament records for most free throws made in a game (19) and most free throws attempted in a game (21). Griffin shot 14-of-23 (.609) from the floor, including 4-of-6 from downtown, while posting a 90.5-free throw percentage.
In setting the school mark for most points in a game, Griffin replaced the previous record of 49 points tallied by Barry Friedman '95 on February 10, 1994 in a win over Marymount (Va.) University as Friedman shot 10-of-11 from downtown.
He started the weekend with 12 points, three rebounds, two steals, and two assists in the win over McDaniel and then added 15 points, four assists, and three steals against Salisbury.
The Seahawks will be idle until after the Thanksgiving break when St. Mary's travels to Lancaster, Pa. to take on No. 6 Franklin & Marshall College in non-conference action on Monday, November 30 at 7:30 pm. Last season, F & M finished fourth in the 2009 NCAA Division III Championship Tournament.
