Brady Three-Pointer Propels York (PA) to Win over No. 14 St. Marys
York, Pa. - Senior guard Nick Brady (Hanover, Pa./Delone Catholic) connected on a three pointer from the left wing with four seconds left in regulation to lift York (Pa.) College to a 64-61 Capital Athletic Conference victory over No. 14 St. Mary's College of Maryland Saturday night.
St. Mary's (6-2, 3-1 CAC) overcame an eight-point deficit in the second half with a 19-7 run to stake a 57-53 advantage with five minutes remaining in the game. Brady's second three-pointer of the contest sparked an 8-2 spurt that helped the Spartans regain a two-point lead at 00:46.
Junior guard Alex Franz (Catonsville, Md./Cardinal Gibbons) knotted the game at 61-all with 12 seconds on the clock with a pair of free throws after Franz was fouled when hauling in his season-best 10th rebound of the game.
Brady finished with a game-high 22 points on 9-of-19 shooting while junior guard Kevin Whaley (Dover, Pa./Dover) added 18 points as Brady and Whaley combined for six of York's seven three-pointers in the game. Senior forward Jeremy Keefer (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra) grabbed a game-best 11 boards while chipping in seven points and four assists.
The Spartans (8-1, 2-0 CAC) rushed out to a 21-12 lead in the first half as Whaley's three-pointer at 19:16 initiated the run before St. Mary's strong shooting took over for a 10-0 run and a one-point lead. Back-to-back lay-ups by freshman guard Chris Hutchinson (Baltimore, Md./New Town) in a 20-second span gave the Seahawks a 26-23 margin with 3:35 left in the half.
Keefer returned the lead to York with four straight points before junior center Sam Burum's (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) layup with 56 ticks on the clock put St. Mary's ahead 28-27 at halftime.
Senior guard Camontae Griffin (Baltimore, Md./Dunbar) paced the Seahawks with 15 points and three steals while junior forward Johann Jones (Severn, Md./Meade Senior) tallied a career-high 13 points and pulled down seven rebounds. Hutchinson finished with a season-best 12 points in his first collegiate start while Franz registered a double-double on 10 points and 10 caroms along with seven assists.
York's perimeter defense kept the Seahawks off-balance as St. Mary's was only 1-of-6 from downtown while the Spartans were 7-of-17.
St. Mary's will be take a short break from games for final exams before returning to the court in the Caribbean as the Seahawks will take on Susquehanna University on December 19 at 5:30 pm in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
