Griffin Named November Athlete of the Month
St. Mary's City, Md. - Camontae Griffin (Baltimore, Md./Dunbar) of the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's basketball team was voted by the Department of Athletics and Recreation as the November Athlete of the Month after leading the Seahawks to their second consecutive Pride of Maryland championship title and setting several tournament records.
The 5-9, senior guard averaged 27.3 points in a 3-1 month for St. Mary's, who posted an 89-77 victory over conference rival, Hood College (November 22), in the championship game of the Pride of Maryland Championship presented by M&T Bank behind a school, career, and tournament record 51 points from Griffin.
Repeating as the tournament MVP, he set tournament records for most points in a tournament (78), most points in a game (51), and most points in a half (27) as well as establishing tournament records for most free throws made in a game (19) and most free throws attempted in a game (21). Griffin shot 14-of-23 (.609) from the floor, including 4-of-6 from downtown, while posting a 90.5-free throw percentage.
In setting the school mark for most points in a game, Griffin replaced the previous record of 49 points tallied by Barry Friedman '95 on February 10, 1994 in a win over Marymount (Va.) University as Friedman shot 10-of-11 from downtown.
He started the weekend with 12 points, three rebounds, two steals, and two assists in an 83-56 win over McDaniel College (November 20) in the first round and then added 15 points, four assists, and three steals in a 78-76 victory over CAC rival, Salisbury University (November 21).
Griffin finished out the month with 31 points on 12-of-24 shooting and four steals in a 72-61 loss at then-No. 6 Franklin & Marshall College (November 30).
