Franz, Griffin Earn All-CAC Honors
York, Pa. - St. Mary's College of Maryland guards Alex Franz (Catonsville, Md./Cardinal Gibbons) and Camontae Griffin (Baltimore, Md./Dunbar) were both selected to the 2009 Capital Athletic Conference Men's Basketball All-Conference First Team as announced by league commissioner, Tom Byrnes.
The duo led the Seahawks to a 21-5 overall record as well as the program's first-ever conference regular-season title when St. Mary's finished atop of the league standings with a 14-2 CAC mark. Both Franz and Griffin are earning their first-ever postseason honors.
Franz started all 26 games and finished second in scoring with 13.3 points per game. He led the team with 137 assists and 69 steals, which were also tops in the conference at 5.3 assists per game and 2.7 steals per game. The 6-1 sophomore was third on the team in rebounding with 5.2 boards per game, ranking him 15th in the league.
Franz is also ranked third in assist/turnover ratio with 1.4 and 13th in scoring in the CAC as well. He poured in a career-high 23 points in the win over Wesley College on February 21 as Franz made a career-best three long-range shots. Franz dished out a career-high 13 assists in the win over York (Pa.) College on February 7.
In his first year with the Seahawks, Griffin led St. Mary's in scoring with a conference second-best 20.4 points per game. He was second on the team with 74 assists and 43 steals as he started 25 games. The 5-9 junior ranked fifth in the CAC in both free throw percentage with 78.2 percent and steals with a 1.7 average, 10th in both assists with 3.0 per game and assist/turnover ratio with 0.8, and 15th in three-point field goal percentage with 34.1 percent.
Griffin tallied a career-high 31 points in a win over Marymount (Va.) University on December 6. Twice, he dished out seven assists, while Griffin picked five pockets in a win over the University of Mary Washington.
