Griffin Selected as St. Mary’s January Athlete-of-the-Month
St. Mary's City, Md. - Camontae Griffin (Baltimore, Md.), a member of the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's basketball team, was a unanimous selection to be the January Athlete-of-the-Month as voted on by the Department of Athletics and Recreation.
The 5-9, junior guard helped the Seahawks (20-4) to a 7-2 record for the month of January, including a 6-2 mark in Capital Athletic Conference action. Griffin earned PrestoSports/Provident Pride Player-of-the-Week (January 19) and CAC Player-of-the-Week (February 2) honors as he averaged 23.1 points in nine games. In seven games, he notched 20+ points, including four times in which he tallied 25 or more points.
The Dunbar HS product was one-point shy of matching his season-high with 30 points in a 77-71 overtime victory at Marymount (Va.) University on January 31. Griffin shot 11-of-19 from the floor, including 3-of-6 from downtown.
He twice registered seven helpers as St. Mary's handed the University of Mary Washington an 81-77 overtime setback on January 17 and then posted a 114-80 win over Stevenson University on January 29.
In the OT win over Mary Washington, Griffin picked up a season-best five steals while adding a game-high 25 points on 9-of-17 shooting.
In a 101-97 overtime loss at York (Pa.) College on January 14, he put up a game-high 27 points on 10-of-23 shooting, while going a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line.
He also poured in a team-high 27 points in a 97-93 loss at Wesley College on January 24 as Griffin shot 10-of-17 from the field.
For the month, he shot 55.2 percent from the floor, including 36.4 percent from downtown. Griffin also connected on 52 of his 65 free throw attempts for 80.0 percent. He averaged 4.0 assists, 2.2 steals, and 1.9 rebounds as well.
