Griffin Named Player-of-the-Week by Two Organizations
St. Mary's City, Md. - The 2008 Provident Pride of Maryland Tournament MVP, junior Camontae Griffin (Baltimore, Md./Dunbar) was named the player-of-the-week by both the Capital Athletic Conference and the PrestoSports/Provident Pride organization for the week ending November 30.
Griffin started tournament action with a game-high 23 points as the Seahawks posted a come-from-behind 84-77 victory over McDaniel College in the first round of the Provident Pride Tournament. He also had three assists and three steals.
The 5-9 guard followed that up with a 21-point performance in an 88-60 win over Washington (Md.) College in the semifinals. Griffin added four assists and matched his season-high with three steals.
He ended the tournament with a season-best 28 points as St. Mary's overcame a nine-point halftime deficit to notch an 84-81 triumph over Johns Hopkins University in the tournament championship game.
For the tournament, Griffin averaged 24.0 points, 3.3 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 2.3 steals. He also shot 52.1% from the floor and 81.8% from the free throw line.
Griffin currently ranks in the Top 10 in several categories in the CAC. He is second in scoring with 21.0 points per game, fifth in steals (2.0 spg), tied for sixth in assists (3.0 apg), seventh in free throw percentage (.800) and assist/turnover ratio (0.8) and 10th in field goal percentage (.507).
The Baltimore native has helped the Seahawks to an undefeated mark of 5-0 as the defending CAC Champions look to make a return trip to the NCAA Tournament. St. Mary's opens up conference play on Wednesday, December 3 at Stevenson University. Tip-off is set for 8:00 in the Student Union Gymnasium.
