St. Mary's Field Hockey Repeats as Academic Team, Nine Named to Academic Squad

Chandler, Ariz. – The Zag Field Hockey/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division III National Academic Teams and National Academic Squad were both announced over the last nine days.

On March 20, St. Mary's College of Maryland was one of 130 squads to earn National Academic Team status for the 2017 season. The National Academic Team Award recognizes those programs that achieved a minimum team grade-point average of 3.0 during the first semester of the 2017-18 academic year.

Springfield College achieved the top team GPA in the nation with a mark of 3.78 in the first semester. Bowdoin College was next with a 3.71 GPA followed by Swarthmore College (3.69), Earlham College (3.65), and Amherst College (3.64) to round out the Top 5 team GPAs in Division III.

This is the Seahawks' 19th straight Zag Field Hockey/NFHCA Division III National Academic Team Award as St. Mary's posted a 3.1621 team GPA during the fall. All but two of the seven Capital Athletic Conference schools with field hockey teams made the list.

In addition, nine Seahawks were a part of over 1,700 student-athletes representing 149 schools to be selected to the 2017 Zag Field Hockey/NFHCA Division III National Academic Squad. The National Academic Squad program recognizes those student-athletes who have achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or higher through the first semester of the 2017-18 academic year.

Senior Nicole Lertora (Olney, Md./Blake) and Alyssa Thompson (Arnold, Md./Broadneck); juniors Kara Feidelseit (Germantown, Md./Seneca Valley), Sophia Macek (Laurel, Md./Reservoir), Courtney Mellon (Mount Airy, Md./Urbana), Megan Rice (Solomon, Md./Patuxent), Brooke Steinhoff (Urbana, Md./Urbana), and Jessica Zhang (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard); and sophomore Kelbey Egerland (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air) represented the Seahawks on the National Academic Squad.

Haverford College led all schools with 23 National Academic Squad selections. Since 2000, St. Mary's has earned 209 National Academic Squad honors. The Seahawks were third among their conference counterparts in terms of number of selections while York College of Pennsylvania led the way with 13.

St. Mary's finished with eight wins in Jessica Lanham's second season as head coach, the most wins since the Seahawks recorded 10 victories in 2014. The Seahawks gained a berth in the CAC Field Hockey Championship Tournament for the 24th consecutive season.
