St. Mary's Field Hockey Picked to Finish Fifth in CAC Preseason Poll

Fredericksburg, Va. – The Capital Athletic Conference released its 2017 preseason coaches' poll for field hockey Monday afternoon and St. Mary's College of Maryland was tabbed to finish fifth in this year's tally of votes by the conference coaches.

With the Seahawks being picked to finish fifth, St. Mary's is favored to garner one of the coveted five conference playoff spots, with the championship game of the 2017 CAC Field Hockey Championship Tournament set for Saturday, November 4.

Four-time defending CAC champion Salisbury University was the unanimous selection to continue its title streak in the 2017 Capital Athletic Conference Field Hockey Preseason Poll. The Sea Gulls tallied six first-place votes and 36 points to secure first place in a vote among the seven conference head coaches.

Christopher Newport took second in the poll with 30 points and the other first-place vote, with University of Mary Washington close behind in third place with 27 points. York College of Pennsylvania earned fourth place with 22 points, followed by St. Mary's (16 points), Frostburg State University (11 points), and Wesley College (6 points).

St. Mary's went 5-12 (2-4 CAC) last season during Jessica Lanham's first season as head coach, gaining a CAC playoff berth for the 23rd consecutive season. In addition, Carly Todd '17 and Brady Wolf '17 both gained second team All-CAC honors.

Coach Lanham is excited about what the 2017 campaign has to offer. She has brought in a talented group of 10 newcomers to complement a veteran nucleus of 13 letter winners, including eight returning starters. The trio of team captains – senior midfielder Megan Moore (Gambrills, Md./Arundel), senior goalkeeper Alyssa Thompson (Arnold, Md./Broadneck), and junior Kara Feidelseit (Germantown, Md./Seneca Valley) – will work with the coaching staff to develop great team chemistry and lead the way through a challenging schedule.

Top Returners

  • Megan Moore (Sr., M) – Second for the Seahawks in 2016 with five goals and 12 points while leading the team with two assists, two game-winning goals and two defensive saves
  • Mollie Belson (Jr., M) – Third on the team last season with four goals and 10 points while sharing the team lead with two assists
  • Alyssa Thompson (Sr., GK) – Second in the conference in 2016 with 82 saves while posting a .678 save percentage and 2.49 GAA with two shutouts

  • Abbie Busch (Fy., M, Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) – Honorable Mention All-Carroll County; Collected eight goals and three defensive saves
  • Emily Pulkowski (Fy., M, Westminster, Md./Westminster) – Second team All-Maryland; First team All-Carroll County; Selected to play in 2016 Maryland All-State Senior Game
  • Meghan Ronan (Fy., D, Odenton, Md./Arundel) – 2015 NFHCA Scholar of Distinction; 2015 NFHCA All-Academic Squad; 2014 Unsung Hero; 2013 Most Improved Player

Key Losses

  • Carly Todd (F) – Second team All-CAC selection who led the team with 16 points, seven goals, two assists, and two game-winning goals
  • Brady Wolf (F) – Second team All-CAC pick who was tied for the team lead with two assists and ranked fourth for the Seahawks with eight points and three goals

The Seahawks begin the 2017 season this Friday, September 1 when they travel to Goucher College for a game under the lights at 7:00 p.m.
