Lynchburg, Va. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland field hockey team suffered a 10-0 setback Sunday afternoon at the hands of No. 9 Lynchburg College in non-conference action.
The Hornets (6-1) were relentless in their attack, firing off 35 shots and scoring five goals in each half. Lynchburg posted a 20-4 advantage in penalty corners as well.
St. Mary's (2-4) tallied six shots on a solid Hornet defense that has only given up two goals in their last five games. First-year forward Paige Decker (Clarksville, Md./River Hill) notched two shots on target while midfielders Rachel Natoli (Silver Spring, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) and Claire Kortyna (Pittsburgh, Pa./Pine-Richland) each had one shot on goal.
First-year goalkeeper Christy Bishop (Glenwood, Md./Glenelg) made four saves in the first 40 minutes while sophomore Ana Wash (Yorktown, Va./York) added four stops in the final 30 minutes of action.
St. Mary's hopes to get back in the win column on Thursday, September 22 when the Seahawks welcome Goucher College (4-1) to Seahawk Stadium for non-conference action at 4:30 pm.
