Parker Nets Game-Winner in OT
St. Mary's City, Md. - Freshman forward Lauriann Parker (Woodbine, Md./Glenelg) found the back of the cage nearly five minutes into the first overtime period to lift St. Mary's College of Maryland to a 2-1 overtime non-conference field hockey victory over The College of Wooster Saturday afternoon.
Freshman midfielder Natalie Hackstaff (Denver, Colo./St. Mary's Academy) sent a long pass into the circle where Parker tipped the ball into the cage at 74:47 for the sudden victory goal.
The Seahawks (6-4) struck early as sophomore forward Susan Smith (Chestertown, Md./Queen Anne's County) fired in a shot towards the near right post and Parker deflected the ball into the lower right corner for a 1-0 lead at 5:41.
St. Mary's nursed its 1-0 lead until the 62nd minute when Wooster (9-2) capitalized on one of its 11 penalty corners to knot the game at 1-all. Senior forward Brittany Montgomery (Glens Falls, N.Y./Glens Falls) inserted the ball into play by driving it to the top of the circle where junior Stephanie Standera (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) drove the ball just inside the left post.
The Seahawks tallied 21 shots, including three in overtime, while the Fighting Scots finished the game with 14. St. Mary's edged Wooster in penalty corners, 12 to 11.
Junior goalkeeper Emma Lauhoff (Wayne, Pa./Radnor) recorded six saves in picking up her sixth win of the season.
Sophomore Madalyn Myers (Lebanon, Ohio/Ursuline Academy) tallied 10 stops in defeat.
St. Mary's will return to action in two weeks when the Seahawks welcome Washington & Lee University to Seahawk Stadium for non-conference action on Thursday, October 15 at 4:00 pm.
Wooster will be back in action tomorrow as the Fighting Scots travel to Ashland, Va. to take on Randolph-Macon College at noon.
