No. 18 Christopher Newport Gets Past St. Marys
Newport News, Va. - Junior forward Taylor Harrell (Virginia Beach, Va./Cox) scored once in each half in leading No. 18 Christopher Newport University to a 3-1 non-conference field hockey victory over St. Mary's College of Maryland Saturday evening.
Harrell established a 1-0 lead for Christopher Newport (10-3) at 28:08 as she notched an unassisted goal. The Captains would take the one-goal advantage into halftime as senior goalkeeper Emma Stout (Fredericksburg, Va./Courtland) rejected two of St. Mary's three first-half shots.
Freshman forward Lauriann Parker (Woodbine, Md./Glenelg) tallied the equalizer at 50:29 off an assist by freshman midfielder Brooke Masimore (Hampstead, Md./North Carroll).
Harrell returned CNU's one-goal cushion at 58:58 as she converted a feed from junior midfielder Kylie Cale (Chester, Va./Thomas Dale) for her team-leading 14th goal of the season.
Senior forward Anne Gehring (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) gave the Captains breathing room as Gehring picked up her sixth goal of the season off an assist by freshman Caitlin Cahill (Virginia Beach, Va./Bayside) at 67:14.
Christopher Newport outshot the Seahawks (6-5) by a 12 to 7 margin, while dominating penalty corners 10 to 2. Stout recorded five saves in the CNU win.
Junior Emma Lauhoff (Wayne, Pa./Radnor) also had five stops for St. Mary's, while senior defender Julia Puzak (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) registered two defensive saves and junior defender Megan Tracy (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) had one.
