St. Marys Edges Mary Washington in OT
Fredericksburg, Va. - Senior captain Emily Smithson (Richmond, Va./James River) scored both goals to lift the St. Mary's College of Maryland field hockey team to a 2-1 overtime victory at the University of Mary Washington in Capital Athletic Conference action Wednesday afternoon.
Smithson notched the game-winner with 9:39 remaining in the first overtime period with her team-leading fourth goal of the season as result of a penalty corner. Freshman Sam Locke (Bethesda, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) inserted the ball into play towards the top of the circle where Smithson stopped it and fired it in for the victory.
Smithson gave the Seahawks (4-2, 3-1 CAC) an early 1-0 lead at 8:38 as she put in a loose ball after a penalty corner.
Mary Washington (3-3, 1-1 CAC) responded in the second half as sophomore forward Emma Jones (Yorktown, Va./York) completed a feed from senior forward Amy Santella (Summit, N.J./Summit) at 40:34.
The Eagles posted a 13-9 advantage in shots as well as a 9-5 margin in penalty corners.
Sophomore Emma Lauhoff (Wayne, Pa./Radnor) recorded nine saves in the victory, including six in the second half.
UMW's sophomore Chrissy Bowdren (Fairfax Station, Va./Twin Valley) picked up four stops for the Eagles.
The Seahawks will be back in action this Sunday, September 21 when St. Mary's entertains No. 20 Lynchburg College at 1:00 in non-conference action.
