Grice Goal Lifts St. Marys Past Stevenson

Sophomore forward Caitlin Grice
St. Mary's City, Md. - This time, the St. Mary's College of Maryland field hockey needed just one goal to pick up their second win of the season as the Seahawks posted a 1-0 victory over the visiting Mustangs of Stevenson University (formerly Villa Julie College) Wednesday afternoon in Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) action.
Sophomore forward Caitlin Grice (Hampstead, Md./North Carroll) netted St. Mary's (2-0, 1-0 CAC) lone goal for her first of the season at 7:30 as sophomore midfielder Allie Skiest (Arnold, Md./Seton Keough) assisted on the play.
This is only the second time in the program's 15-year history that the Seahawks have started a season with a 2-0 mark. The first time happened at the beginning of the 2003 campaign when the Hawks opened up with wins over Gwynedd-Mercy College and the College of Wooster. That season, SMCM finished with a 10-9 record, marking the first time in program history that double-digit wins had been recorded.
Stevenson (1-2, 0-1 CAC) finished with only six shots on the day and all six came in the second half.
The Seahawks registered 13 penalty corners on the day but were unable to increase their lead as sophomore goalkeeper Kara Zimmerman (Odenton, Md./Arundel) stopped nine shots to keep the Mustangs within reach.
SMCM's sophomore Emma Lauhoff (Wayne, Pa./Radnor) just needed to make one save in recording her first solo shutout of her career.
St. Mary's will face its toughest contest to date as the Seahawks play host to second-ranked Salisbury University this Saturday, September 6 in league play at 2:00 in Seahawk Stadium. Salisbury is the 13-time defending CAC Champion as well as the 2007 NCAA national runner-up.
The Mustangs will return to action on Sunday when Stevenson entertains Randolph-Macon College in non-conference action at 12:30.
