Ward Helps St. Marys to Victory at Randolph-Macon

Jackie Ward
Ashland, Va. - Sophomore defender Jackie Ward (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) matched her career-high with a goal and an assist as the St. Mary's College of Maryland field hockey team picked up their second straight win on the road. The Seahawks (6-6) handed host Randolph-Macon College a 3-1 setback Tuesday afternoon in non-conference action.
St. Mary's struck an early 2-0 lead behind goals from senior midfielder Emily Smithson (Richmond, Va./James River) and sophomore forward Katie Cox (Frederick, Md./Linganore).
Smithson tallied her team-leading sixth goal on a penalty corner at 13:09 as Ward inserted the ball into play sending it to Smithson at the top of the circle who then smashed into the back of the cage.
Cox's goal came at 21:12 as she put in a loose ball in front of the net.
Randolph-Macon (6-7) cut the Seahawk lead to one over two minutes later as junior forward Lindsay Walker (Berlin, Md./Stephen Decatur) made good on a penalty corner. Junior midfielder Nicole Klee (Suffolk, Va./Lakeland) and sophomore forward Kendall Lam (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam) both assisted on the play.
SMCM tacked on an insurance goal at 37:49 as Ward completed a pass from sophomore forward Caitlin Grice (Hampstead, Md./North Carroll).
Despite boasting an 18 to 9 advantage in penalty corners, the Yellow Jackets were unable to put one past the Seahawk defense and sophomore Emma Lauhoff (Wayne, Pa./Radnor) as Lauhoff came up with five second-half saves.
Shots for the game for fairly even as R-MC rattled off 16 and St. Mary's had 14.
Lauhoff finished the afternoon with eight stops, while senior Ashley Crouch (Chester, Va./Thomas Dale) made 10 saves in the loss for Randolph-Macon.
St. Mary's looks to pick up its third straight victory when the Seahawks host Hood College for their final Capital Athletic Conference regular-season match-up of 2008 on Senior Day. The match will start at 12:30 in Seahawk Stadium.
