No. 19 Christopher Newport Holds Off St. Mary’s

St. Mary's City, Md. - The 19th-ranked Christopher Newport University field hockey team used a goal in each half and held off a pesky St. Mary's College of Maryland squad en route to a 2-0 non-conference win Sunday afternoon.

Christopher Newport's first goal came at 12:38 off a set penalty corner play as junior Kim Tomlin (Virginia Beach, Va./Landstown) put the ball into play to senior forward Haylie Black (Newport News, Va./Menchville), who was standing to the left of the cage on the circle.  Black then shot the ball towards the near post where Tomlin deflected the ball into the cage as she sat on the goalie's pads.

The Captains (11-4) controlled the first half with a 6-2 shot advantage, however, sophomore Emma Lauhoff (Wayne, Pa./Radnor) kept St. Mary's in the game with three saves.

Senior Ashley Cybulski (Oakton, Va./James Madison) notched CNU's second goal at 66:32 as Cybulski deflected a shot at hip-level taken by senior Nicole Kuykendall (Newport News, Va./Menchville).

St. Mary's (7-7) remained undaunted, outshooting the Captains, 5-3 in the second half.  The Seahawks also posted a 5-4 edge in corners in the second 35-minute half, including three in the game's final 2:30.

The Captains' finished the contest with a 9-7 edge in shots as well as a 9-8 margin in corners.

Lauhoff completed the match with five stops, while junior Emma Stout (Fredericksburg, Va./Courtland) also made five saves for CNU.

St. Mary's returns to action this Tuesday, October 21 at 3:30 when the Seahawks host Eastern Mennonite University in non-conference action.
