Seahawk Baseball Falls Twice at Marymount (Va.)

Arlington, Va. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland baseball team was held to just three runs Saturday afternoon as St. Mary's returned to Capital Athletic Conference action against Marymount (Va.) University. Marymount (11-10, 4-2 CAC) swept the twin bill against the Seahawks (8-8, 1-5 CAC) with scores of 13-0 and 15-3 as the games were played at Bishop O'Connell High School.

How It Happened

  • St. Mary's struggled to get the bats going in the first game while the host Saints scored at least one run in all but two innings. Marymount owned a 4-0 lead through five innings before tallying four runs each in the sixth and seventh innings. Luke Tyree highlighted the seventh with a grand slam.

How It Happened

  • St. Mary's put up a two-spot in the top of the first inning for its first and only lead of the afternoon. First-year infielder Andy Collins (Arlington, Va./Washington-Lee), the leadoff hitter, connected on a single, advanced to second on an error and came home on redshirt sophomore Jay Hammet's (Coltons Point, Md./Chopticon) RBI infield single for a 1-0 lead with no outs on the board. The Seahawks doubled their lead when first-year outfielder Sam James (Charlottesville, Va./Western Albemarle) crossed home plate on first-year designated hitter Joey Bryner's (Leonardtown, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) one-out RBI double to left center.
  • The Saints notched two of their own in the first to pull even after one inning of play and then tacked on five in the fifth and two in the sixth for a 9-2 lead.
  • The Seahawks' third and final run came in the seventh as Hammett, who bats third, and senior catcher Sean Goodie (Rising Sun, Md./Rising Sun) connected on consecutive singles to lead off the inning. Hammett advanced to third on a fielder's choice to Bryner before scoring on a fielder's choice to junior infielder Matt Ansaldi (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron).
  • Marymount put the game away with another five-run inning in the seventh and a single run for good measure in the eighth. The Saints finished the game with nine extra-base hits, including a pair of home runs off the bats of Conner Hall and Cal Berman.

Inside the Box Score

  • Hammett cracked a career-high four hits in four at-bats with one run scored and one RBI while Collins contributed season-bests of three hits and two doubles
  • Senior infielder Joe Bavaro (Brick, N.J./Point Pleasant Boro) picked up a career-best two hits for the second time in his career.
  • Redshirt junior Dan McCann (North Laurel, Md./Atholton) suffered the loss on the mound, falling to 1-1 on the season as McCann gave up seven earned runs on 10 hits in 4.1 innings with one walk and one strikeout.
