How It Happened

  • D'Youville opened up the game in a big way with a one-out, two-run home run over the leftfield fence by Justin Brackna batting in the three-hole. St. Mary's held the Spartans to two runs with back-to-back fly outs to end the first inning.
  • The Seahawks responded with three runs of their own in the bottom of the first. Redshirt junior infielder Dan McCann (North Laurel, Md./Atholton), hitting in the second slot, was hit by a pitch, stole second and then came home on a single up the middle by redshirt sophomore infielder Jay Hammett (Coltons Point, Md./Chopticon). Junior outfielder Holden Marshall (Towson, Md./Friends) then connected on a two-out triple to score Hammett and first-year DH Joey Bryner (Leonardtown, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) to give St. Mary's a 3-2 lead.
  • Following a scoreless second inning, DYC reclaimed a one-run lead in the third as Travis Macrides hit a sacrifice fly to left field to bring home Josh Hammer, who led off the inning with a single.
  • St. Mary's once again outdid the Spartans, putting up two on the board to stake a 5-3 advantage following RBI singles by senior catcher Sean Goodie (Rising Sun, Md./Rising Sun) and junior outfielder Dakota Merritt (Lexington Park, Md./Great Mills).
  • The Seahawks tacked on one more run in the sixth for a three-run cushion as McCann's single to right field allowed first-year infielder Connor Coursey (Silver Spring, Md./Good Counsel) to cross home plate.
  • D'Youville rallied in the seventh as the Spartans used a ground out to second and a single up the middle to pull within 6-5 with only one out. However, a pop up to second and a fly out to right field cut the rally short and preserved St. Mary's 6-5 win. Merritt would finish with a career-high four putouts in patrolling the right field.
  • First-year LHP Jackson Edelman (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill East) improved to 3-1 on the season with four strikeouts in 6.0 innings of work while junior RHP Matt Ansaldi (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron) earned his first career save with one inning of relief.

How It Happened

  • D'Youville once again claimed an early 2-0 lead with a run in the first and a run in the second but the Spartans struggled to score after that as first-year Will Spanoghe (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary's-Annapolis) struck out a season-best seven batters.
  • St. Mary's cut the deficit to 2-1 in the fourth when Merritt took a walk, went to second on a wild pitch, advanced to third on a single by Coursey and then scored on a fielder's choice by the third baseman.
  • The Seahawks then posted a 3-2 advantage in the fifth as Marshall connected on a two-out single to right field to bring home both Goodie and McCann.
  • St. Mary's locked up the win with three additional runs in the sixth. Coursey made it 4-2 after taking a leadoff walk, going to second on a sacrifice bunt by senior infielder Bennett Garner (Bowie, Md./Bowie), and then scoring on a double by junior outfielder Lucas Kraft (Boyds, Md./Clarksburg). The Seahawks went up three when Goodie took a bases loaded walk and Kraft came home. The final run of the day resulted from Ansaldi's sacrifice fly to bring home McCann.
  • In the seventh, D'Youville's leadoff hitter reached on an error but was then picked off at first before Spanoghe retired the next batters.
  • This was Spanoghe's first complete game of the season as well as his first win of the season.
