York, Pa. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland baseball team played their fifth game in four days on Wednesday afternoon and succumbed to a 7-5 Capital Athletic Conference loss at York College of Pennsylvania. Today's win completed the series sweep by York who had earned a 10-7 win at the Hawk's Nest on March 13th.
York (8-8, 4-5 CAC) struck first in the bottom of the first as senior Derek Pitzer (York, Pa./Dallastown) laid down a two-out RBI double to bring home the Spartans' first and only run of the inning. St. Mary's bats got to work in the top of the third, evening up the game at 1-1 as senior captain Brad Dioguardo (Owings Mills, Md./Franklin) connected on an RBI single to bring home sophomore 2B Zach Rowe (Annapolis, Md./Calvert Hall) who singled and then stole second.
The Spartans staked a 2-1 lead in their half of the third as senior J.J. Oleniacz (Great Falls, Va./Langley) scored on a wild pitch after leading off the inning with a walk, advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt, and going to third after tagging up on a fly out to centerfield.
St. Mary's (6-13, 3-5 CAC) tied it up once again in the fourth as junior DH Hayden Ferington (Centreville, Md./Westfield) cracked an RBI double to drive home senior captain Jared Eaker (Mechanicsville, Md./Leonardtown), who led off with a single and then went to second on a sac bunt.
The Seahawks then claimed a 3-2 lead in the fifth as senior captain Luke Green (Bowie, Md./DeMatha) singled to left field to score senior RF Matt Holdefer (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake), who led off with a single, went to second on a sac bunt, and advanced to third on a ground out.
York reclaimed a 4-3 lead in the sixth following a two-run homer by senior Brad Wenzel (Blandon, Pa./Fleetwood Area). St. Mary's answered with a run in the seventh to tie up the score for the third time as Dioguardo's ground out to first brought home junior SS Hunter Mohler (La Plata, Md./Bishop McNamara), who hit a lead-off single, went to second on a sac bunt, and got to third on a Rowe single.
The Spartans went up 7-4 with three runs in their half of the seventh as Wenzel and senior Stephen Miele (Allentown, Pa./Salisbury) contributed a pair of RBI doubles and first-year pinch runner Zach Hossler (Jefferson, Md./Brunswick) came home on a wild pitch.
St. Mary's got one back in the eighth as Eaker scored on a grounder to first by junior LF Michael O'Neill (Ocean City, Md./Decatur) after a lead-off walk, going to second on a balk, and advancing to third on a single by junior C Connor Goodie (Rising Sun, Md./Rising Sun). After keeping York scoreless in the eighth, the Seahawk side was retired in order by senior closer Zach Philippi (Levittown, Pa./Truman) for the two-run York win.
Mohler and Rowe paced the Seahawks at the plate with two hits each while each stole a base. First-year reliever Matt Henigan (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) was saddled with the loss after giving up three runs on two hits in the eighth while striking out one in 0.2 innings of work.
Senior RHP Andrew Tucci (Birdsboro, Pa./Boone) improved to 2-0 on the season after allowing four runs on eight hits with one strikeout and one walk in 7.0 innings pitched while Philippi recorded his first save of the season with one run on two hits and a pair of strikeouts over the final two innings of the game. York snapped a five-game skid with this afternoon's win.
The Seahawks will look to put a stop to their three-game skid tomorrow, April 2nd as St. Mary's brings to a close to its six-game road trip in Dover, Delaware in a CAC matchup against Wesley College at 3:30 p.m. Wesley already won against the Seahawks, posting a 9-8 victory in 10 innings at the Hawk's Nest on March 12th.
