St. Mary's Baseball Predicted to Finish Seventh in CAC Preseason Poll

York, Pa. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland baseball team was voted to come in seventh in the 2015 Capital Athletic Conference Baseball Preseason Coaches Poll. The Seahawks tallied 38 points (coaches were not allowed to vote for their own teams) for the No. 7 spot but only five points separated No. 5 University of Mary Washington, No. 6 Wesley College, and St. Mary's.

St. Mary's is just days away from Opening Day as the Seahawks start the 2015 season with a three-game series on the road at Randolph-Macon College, who was picked to finish second in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference, on February 7-8.

Three-time defending CAC champion, Salisbury University, received five first-place votes as the conference coaches expect the Sea Gulls to pick up their fourth consecutive title. Salisbury edged Christopher Newport University by just one point as the Captains, who earned five first-place votes as well, will look to challenge for their first CAC crown in just their second year as a league member.

York College of Pennsylvania bested Frostburg State University by three points for the third spot while the Bobcats, the 2011 CAC Champions, took fourth. Marymount, a second-year program, plus second-year members, Penn State Harrisburg and Southern Virginia University, completed the poll in that order.

The Seahawks are coming off a challenging 2014 campaign which saw them finish two games under .500 (18-20, 8-8 CAC), dropping eight contests by two runs or less.

Head Coach Lew Jenkins, the longest-tenured coach in the conference as he enters his 21st season, hopes to find the right mix in 2015 to collect the program's first winning season since 2011. Senior team captains Brad Dioguardo (Owings Mills, Md./Franklin), Luke Green (Bowie, Md./DeMatha Catholic), Jared Eaker (Mechanicsville, Md./Leonardtown), A.J. Norby (Wayne, Pa./Shipley), and Patrick Watson (Ellicott City, Md./Marriotts Ridge) will work with the coaching staff to help 11 newcomers mesh with the veterans.

Junior southpaw Michael O'Neill (Berlin, Md./Stephen Decatur) is expected to pick up where he left off last season as the Seahawks look to fill the void left by the graduation of their All-Region ace, Sam Beatty '14. O'Neill and Beatty led the staff a year ago with six wins each while combining for 89 strikeouts.

St. Mary's is fortunate to have a young but talented bullpen coming in this year with the return of Watson (14 appearances, 12 K), sophomore Nicholas Raimondo (Davidsonville, Md./South River) (10 app., 13 K), and Norby (10 app., 12 K). Lefties Ben Goldsmith (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) and Jimmy Robey (Kensington, Md./Gonzaga) and sophomore Reid D'Antuono (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) will provide excellent depth in the rotation.

Eaker will lead a potent lineup as the Seahawks return five of their top-7 hitters from 2014. All five hitters hit above .300 and combined for 42 RBIs plus 21 extra-base hits in powering the team at the plate last season.

Green and Eaker will control the defensive play at the corners while sophomore Zach Rowe (Davidsonville, Md./Calvert Hall) and junior transfer Hunter Mohler (College of Southern Maryland) will limit the plays up the middle. Junior Connor Goodie (Rising Sun, Md./Rising Sun) will keep the pitchers on track and the base runners on their toes with his work behind the plate. Speedsters Dioguardo and senior Paul Roemer (Westminster, Md./Westminster) will work together to cover the outfield.
