Washington, D.C. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland baseball team now owns a 7-4 record in one-run games this season after dropping a 7-6 decision in 13 innings to host The Catholic University of America on Wednesday.
Catholic (19-15) notched its second straight win following senior Michael Parco's (Clarksville, Md.) walk-off single up the middle to score first-year Scott Grinnan (West Chester, Pa.) with one out on the board. Grinnan pinch ran for junior Nick Clary (Ocean Township, N.J.), who led off the bottom of the 13th inning with a single. Grinnan then went to second on a sacrifice bunt before crossing home plate for the win.
Sophomore C Connor Goodie (Rising Sun, Md./Rising Sun) tallied three of the Seahawks' 13 hits while first-year 2B Zach Rowe (Annapolis, Md./Calvert Hall), senior captain Alex Lenovitz (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall), junior CF Brandon Eady (Bowie, Md./DeMatha), and senior RF Kenny Beyer (Rockville, Md./Richard Montgomery) each picked up two hits.
Junior Patrick Watson (Ellicott City, Md./Marriotts Ridge) pitched 4.0 innings of relief, taking the loss after yielding the game-winning run on four hits. Senior LHP Sam Coe (Bethesda, Md./Walter Johnson) hurled 7.2 innings, allowing six runs (one earned) on nine hits before giving way to first-year Reid D'Antuono (Ellicott City, Md./Howard).
St. Mary's (18-20) staked an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning following a Lenovitz RBI triple, a Goodie RBI double, and a sac fly by Beyer. The Cardinals got one back in their half of the second inning, cutting the deficit to 3-1 after an RBI single to right field. The Seahawks then doubled their lead to 5-1 in the fourth as Beyer scored on a bunt single and Rowe stroked an RBI single to left.
Catholic closed the gap to 5-2 in the fifth, scoring a run on an SMCM error. The Seahawks went up 6-2 in the eighth on a CUA error before Catholic knotted the game at 6-6 with four runs in its half of the eighth. Three runs came home on sophomore Stefan Poggioli's (Middletown, N.J.) two-out double as the inning was extended because of an SMCM error on what would've been the third out.
Sophomore Eric Scamardella (Holmdel, N.J.) paced the Cardinals at the plate with three hits while fellow classmate Will O'Leary (Jacksonville, Fla.) earned the win as O'Leary threw a scoreless 13th inning, giving up just one hit.
The Seahawks will be back on the diamond on Sunday, April 27th when St. Mary's travels to Gwynedd Valley, Pennsylvania to take on Gwynedd Mercy University in a doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m. These games were rescheduled from February 15th.
