St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland baseball team was unable to sweep the season series with Christopher Newport University as the Seahawks dropped a 9-5 Capital Athletic Conference decision to CNU on Wednesday afternoon.
The Captains' (18-12, 10-5 CAC) win this afternoon avenged their 4-3 home loss to St. Mary's on February 10th in the Seahawks' season-opener.
Christopher Newport staked an opening 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning before the Seahawks evened up the score in the bottom of the fourth. Junior 1B Jared Eaker (Mechanicsville, Md./Leonardtown) reached on a fielding error by the third baseman, went to second on a passed ball, and then scored on a wild pitch.
CNU went up 4-1 in the fifth with three runs behind junior RF Tommy Vitaletti's (Williamsburg, Va./Jamestown) third home run of the season, an RBI double by sophomore LF Jacob Houston (Gloucester, Va./Gloucester), and an RBI triple by sophomore 2B Travis Younger (Chatham, Va./Chatham).
The Seahawks (16-16, 7-7 CAC) kept pace with Christopher Newport with two runs in their half of the fifth for a 4-3 deficit. Junior DH Brad Dioguardo (Owings Mills, Md./Franklin) drove in both runs with a two-out single to centerfield.
The Captains then pushed across five unanswered runs with two in the sixth, one in the seventh, and two in eighth for a 9-3 advantage. Junior 1B Curtis Pittman (Surry, Va./Hampton Christian) highlighted those three innings for CNU with a home run in the sixth, a RBI double in the seventh, and a two-run double in the eighth.
St. Mary's got back two in the ninth. Eaker led off the inning with a double followed by an infield single from junior LF Brandon Eady (Bowie, Md./DeMatha). Eaker scored on senior RF Kenny Beyer's (Rockville, Md./Richard Montgomery) sacrifice fly. Eady then came home on an RBI single off the bat of sophomore C Connor Goodie (Rising Sun, Md./Rising Sun). Back-to-back pop-ups ended the inning.
Dioguardo, Eady, and first-year SS Colin Thatcher (Germantown, Md./Seneca Valley) paced SMCM at the plate with two hits each. Eaker connected on his team-leading 12th double while Thatcher stroked his first career extra-base hit with a double. On the mound, senior LHP Sam Coe (Bethesda, Md./Walter Johnson) suffered the loss as Coe (3-3) gave up five runs on 10 hits in 5.0 innings.
Pittman led the Captains offensively, going 4-for-5 with four RBI, two doubles, and a home run, while senior DH/P Justin Weaver (Nokesville, Va./Brentsville) claimed the win, allowing three runs (two earned) on two hits in 3.0 innings.
The Seahawks will complete their conference schedule on Saturday, April 12th as St. Mary's welcomes CAC newcomer, Penn State Harrisburg, to the Hawk's Nest for a league doubleheader at 12:00 p.m.
