York, Pa. – Senior captain Sam Beatty (Columbia, Md./Hammond) was named the Capital Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week for the second time this season as announced by Tim Mowrer, the assistant CAC commissioner, on Monday afternoon. Beatty garnered the same honor back on February 17th.
The 6-2 right-handed pitcher helped the St. Mary's College of Maryland baseball team (16-15, 7-6 CAC) clinch a berth in the upcoming 2014 CAC Baseball Championship Tournament as Beatty went the distance in winning both of his starts in a 4-1 week for the Seahawks.
He started off the week in record fashion as Beatty fanned a CAC single-game record 16 batters in a 4-3 complete game win at Marymount (Va.) University. His 16 K's broke the old mark of 15 set University of Mary Washington's Jeff Hootselle in 1997. He also tied the school record set by Bill Davis against Washington Bible College in 1999. Beatty allowed no earned runs on five hits and no walks.
Beatty followed that up with his consecutive complete game victory as he posted a 5-3 win over Mary Washington, giving up just one earned run on four hits with three strikeouts.
He finished the week with a 0.50 ERA and walking only four of the 69 batters faced.
Beatty currently leads the conference in wins (6-2), strikeouts (62), and innings pitched (69.1) while ranking third in complete games (3). He is also fourth in strikeouts per game with 8.05 and sixth with a 1.82 ERA.
The Seahawks will be back in action on Wednesday, April 9th as St. Mary's hosts Christopher Newport University in a CAC matchup at the Hawk's Nest at 3:30 p.m.
