Washington, D.C. – Six Seahawks each collected a hit as the St. Mary's College of Maryland baseball team dropped an 11-4 non-conference decision to former Capital Athletic Conference rival, Gallaudet University, on a frigid, windy Wednesday afternoon.
First-year 2B Zach Rowe (Annapolis, Md./Calvert Hall) drove in two runs for the Seahawks (12-13) with a ground out to third in the top of the eighth inning and a single to left field in the ninth. Junior captain Luke Green (Bowie, Md./DeMatha Catholic) scored a pair runs for his team, one in the eighth and one in the ninth.
Junior A.J. Norby (Wayne, Pa./Shipley) was saddled with his third loss of the season as Norby pitched 6.0 innings, scattering seven runs (two earned) on 10 hits and four walks. He also picked up two strikeouts.
Gallaudet (12-7) started off the game with a 1-0 lead following a single run in the bottom of the first inning. The Bison then exploded for four runs in the second, highlighted by one of senior JJ Klein's (Cincinnati, Ohio) two doubles of the day. The lead stretched to 6-0 after three innings with another single run in the third.
The Seahawks kept Gallaudet off the scoreboard for the next innings until a single score in the sixth made it 7-0 in favor of the Bison. GU posted another four-run inning in the seventh for an 11-0 advantage with two innings left to play. Highlighting seventh inning play for the Bison was Klein's two RBI double and an RBI triple by senior William Bissell (Brewer, Maine).
St. Mary's bats finally got going in the eighth as Green led off the inning with a single to centerfield and first-year 1B Anthony Cangelosi (Olney, Md./Good Counsel) followed suit with a single of his own. Junior CF Paul Roemer (Westminster, Md./Westminster) then loaded the bases by drawing a walk. Rowe's ground out brought Green home and left runners on second and third.
Junior CF Brad Dioguardo's (Owings mills, Md./Franklin) sacrifice fly scored Cangelosi, leaving Roemer on third. Senior 3B Alex Lenovitz (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) drew a walk as well, causing the Bison change pitchers. However, the new pitcher tallied the final out and ended St. Mary's rally.
The Seahawks revived the rally in the ninth, loading the bases with a walk and back-to-back hit by pitch with one out on the board. A fielder's choice to Roemer scored senior RF Kenny Beyer (Rockville, Md./Richard Montgomery), leaving runners on the corners. Rowe came through with his RBI single to bring home Green. The ninth ended the same way as the eighth with a ground out.
There's no rest for the road warriors, who have not played at the Hawk's Nest since March 15th, as the Seahawks travel to York College of Pennsylvania on Thursday, March 27th for a CAC game at 3:30 p.m.
