St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland baseball team took their first Capital Athletic Conference loss of the season on a cold, dreary Friday afternoon, falling 7-0 to York College of Pennsylvania.
The Seahawks (5-4, 1-1 CAC) connected on six hits, made two errors, and left 11 runners on base in the team's toughest outing of the season. Junior LF Brandon Eady (Bowie, Md./DeMatha Catholic) was the only player to net a multiple-hit day as Eady went 2-for-4 with his second double of the season.
Senior captain Sam Beatty (Columbia, Md./Hammond) had a slow start but finished strong, throwing 5.0 innings with five strikeouts and three walks. Beatty dropped to 1-2 on the season as he gave up five runs (one unearned) on five hits.
York (4-2, 1-0 CAC) opened its conference portion of the schedule with two runs in the top of the first inning as junior DH Derek Pitzer (York, Pa./Dallastown) stroked a two-out, two-run double to centerfield.
The Spartans stretched their lead to 5-0 in the fourth inning with a three-run burst as York nearly cycled through its batting order. First-year 3B Scott Steffy (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown East) drove in a run with a single to right field for a 3-0 lead before Hershey hit a two-out, two-run double to right field for the five-run advantage.
York added a run in the sixth and one more in the seventh to seal its first conference win of the season. Hershey finished the game with a 4-for-5 effort, including three doubles, and tallied three RBI plus one run scored while Pitzer collected three hits, three RBI, and one run scored. Junior RHP Dan Gurganus (Prince Frederick, Md./Huntingtown) picked up the win as Gurganus hurled a four-hitter.
St. Mary's will look to get back on track on Sunday, March 9th as the Seahawks travel to Dover, Delaware to take on Wesley College in a conference doubleheader at 12:00 p.m.
