St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland baseball team kicked off the home portion of their schedule Saturday afternoon against the Mount Saint Mary (N.Y.) College Knights. Mount Saint Mary (1-1) claimed a 2-1 victory in the first game before the Seahawks (2-1) took a 5-1 decision in the nightcap.
The Knights staked a 1-0 lead in the first inning of the first game as the leadoff hitter, sophomore Mike Leone (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea), reached on a catcher's interference, went to third on a single by senior Vinnie Carminati (Huntington, N.Y./Harborfields), and then scored on a St. Mary's fielding error.
MSMC struck again in the second inning with another run as the No. 6 hitter, first-year Jimmy Papineau (Pleasant Valley, N.Y./Lourdes), reached on a throwing error and advanced to second on the same play before heading to third on a sacrifice bunt. Papineau then came home on a single by first-year Robert Peccerillo (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea).
St. Mary's cut the lead to one in the bottom of the sixth as junior LF Brandon Eady (Bowie, Md./DeMatha Catholic) notched a one-out RBI single to score junior CF Brad Dioguardo (Owings Mills, Md./Franklin). The Knights got out of the inning with a 543 double play. MSMC went scoreless in the seventh and then held the Seahawks to a two-out single in their half of the inning to seal the win.
Senior captain Sam Beatty (Columbia, Md./Hammond) picked up the loss in the first game despite throwing a season-best seven strikeouts and two walks with a pair of unearned runs on five hits in 6.0 innings pitched. Sophomore Brandon Lubrano (Mineola, N.Y./Saint Dominic) notched the Knights' win on the mound with four strikeouts and one earned run on five hits in 6.0 innings.
Junior C Jared Eaker (Mechanicsville, Md./Leonardtown) paced the Seahawks at the plate with a 2-for-4 effort, including his second double of the season. The Knights were led by Carminati's 2-for-4 showing with an RBI.
The Seahawks began the scoring in the second game with a run in the second inning as junior captain Luke Green (Bowie, Md./DeMatha Catholic) came home on an RBI single off the bat of first-year 3B Colin Thatcher (Germantown, Md./Seneca Valley). St. Mary's followed that up with two more in the third inning. MSMC avoided the shutout and cut the lead to two in the top of the fourth as Carminati stole home.
First-year 2B Zach Rowe (Annapolis, Md./Calvert Hall), who led off the fifth, gave St. Mary's a 4-1 lead as Rowe scored on a single by Eady. The Seahawks added their final run in the sixth when Green touched home plate on a wild pitch.
Senior Kenny Beyer (Rockville, Md./Richard Montgomery) led the way for the Seahawks with a 2-for-3 effort while Eady finished with two RBI. Rowe and Green each scored twice. Sophomore Michael O'Neill (Ocean City, Md./Decatur) notched the win as O'Neill gave one run on five hits with four strikeouts. For the Knights, Leone went 2-for-4 at the plate while sophomore Sean Betterly (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow) suffered loss after giving up three runs (two unearned) on four hits.
The two teams will wrap up the three-game series tomorrow at the Hawk's Nest at 11:00 a.m.
