Wesley Holds Off Ninth Inning Rally for 4-3 CAC Win
St. Mary's City, Md. - Freshman Greg McKee (Dover, Del./Caesar Rodney) made a diving play at shortstop for the ninth inning's final out at second base, cutting the St. Mary's College of Maryland baseball team's rally short as Wesley College came away with a 4-3 Capital Athletic Conference triumph Wednesday afternoon.
Junior RHP Colin Warner (Dagsboro, Del./Indian River) recorded his first save of the season as Warner came in the ninth in relief of sophomore RHP Kyle McGuire (Hartly, Del./Polytech). Warner gave up two runs (one earned) on one hit with a strikeout and a walk.
With bases loaded and two outs on the board, junior leftfielder Mark Dattilio (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) connected on a single through the left side to score junior centerfielder Jacen Killebrew (La Plata, Md./La Plata) and cut the lead to 4-2. Killebrew walked in his at-bat. Sophomore right fielder Bobby Corton (Owings Mills, Md./Calvert Hall) brought the Seahawks to within one as Corton crossed home plate after a dropped third strike by senior catcher Alex Carter (Dover, Del./Caesar Rodney) got away from him.
Freshman RHP Matt Faulkner (Milford, Del./Milford) notched his second win of the season as Faulkner (2-0) threw 7.0 innings with four walks and two strikeouts. He allowed one run on six hits.
Wesley (20-12-1, 9-7 CAC) scored in the first three innings to establish a 4-0 lead, including two runs in the third.
Dattilio's sacrifice fly to centerfield with bases loaded allowed Corton to score St. Mary's first run to make it a three-run game after three innings of play.
Along with his strong defensive play, McKee led the Wolverines at the plate with three hits in four attempts, including a double. He also had a run and an RBI, while senior DH Scott Marshall (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial) went 3-for-5.
Junior RHP Jon Gill (Owings Mills, Md./Park) was tagged with the loss as Gill (3-6) yielded four runs on nine hits in 3.0 innings.
Killebrew, Corton, and Dattilio each had two hits for the Seahawks (13-14, 7-9 CAC).
St. Mary's will return to action this Saturday, April 11 when the Seahawks wrap up their three-game series with Wesley in Dover with two, seven-inning games. First pitch is set for 1:00.
