Seahawks Topple Mary Washington, 18-2
St. Mary's City, Md. - The St. Mary's College of Maryland baseball team cruised to an 18-2 Capital Athletic Conference victory over the University of Mary Washington Wednesday afternoon as the Seahawks tallied 10 runs in the fourth inning alone to kick off league action on the right foot.
Junior RHP Jon Gill (Owings Mills, Md./Park) went 7.0 solid innings in improving to 2-2 on the young season. Gill notched four strikeouts with one walk as he gave up just one run on seven hits.
St. Mary's (7-3, 1-0 CAC) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning as junior outfielder Jacen Killebrew's (La Plata, Md./La Plata) scored on senior catcher J.P. Debrowski's (Sykesville, Md./Glenelg) ground out to second.
The Eagles (3-1, 0-1 CAC) responded in the third inning with a run of their own to knot the contest at 1-1 as freshman infielder Shane Sixsmith (Alexandria, Va./West Potomac) came home on junior infielder Seamus Bergen's (Fredericksburg, Va./Chancellor) single to left field.
The home team broke the 1-1 tie in the third as sophomore infielder Matt Baden (Sunderland, Md./Huntingtown) doubled to right field to score Killebrew, while Debrowski connected on a two-run single to left field to bring home senior infielder Blake Beaudoin (Damascus, Md./Damascus) and Baden.
St. Mary's unleashed in the fourth inning as the Seahawks scored 10 runs on six hits. Beaudoin and junior infielder Lyle Kralle (Great Mills, Md./Great Mills) each tallied a two-run single, while the Eagle pitching staff walked in two runs. Mary Washington made three pitching changes in the inning.
The Seahawks continued to roll as they added two runs in the fifth, one in the sixth and the final one in the eighth.
Sophomore outfielder Bobby Corton (Owings Mills, Md./Calvert Hall) was perfect at the plate for the Seahawks with a 4-for-4 effort which included a double. Corton also scored twice and drove in one. Baden finished 4-of-5 with a double, two RBI, and four runs scored. Debrowski and sophomore DH Brad Shepherd (Columbia, Md./Oakland Mills) each tallied three hits, including a double for Shepherd.
The visitors scored its second run in the top of the eighth as Sixsmith crossed home plate on the fielder's choice to the shortstop by junior infielder Will Wright (St. Louis, Mo./St. Louis Priory).
Sophomore RHP Zach Hendrix (Farlysville, Va./Albemarle) suffered the loss as Hendrix (0-1) gave up six runs on six hits in 3.1 innings. He walked four and struck out three. Sixsmith and sophomore Eric Rehbein (Alexandria, Va./Gonzaga) each went 2-for-3 to pace the Eagle offense.
St. Mary's will look to complete the three-game sweep of Mary Washington this Saturday when the Seahawks travel to Fredericksburg, Va. for the twin bill. First pitch is slated for 1:00.
