St. Mary's City, Md. – After the St. Mary's College of Maryland fall teams combined for a 3-5-2 season-opening record, a majority of our Seahawk teams look forward to playing in front of the home crowd and turning around a tough start to the 2018 campaign. Here is everything you need to know about what's going on This Week in Seahawk Athletics!
MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY
When: Friday at McDaniel Green Terror Challenge at 4 p.m.
What you need to know: The men's cross country team opened their 2018 campaign last weekend at the Salisbury Fall Classic. The Seahawks finished in sixth place with first-year Tyler Wilson (Silver Spring, Md./Albert Einstein) leading the way in his collegiate debut with a 33rd-place finish in 28:25.90. St. Mary's prepares to head west on Friday for the McDaniel Green Terror Challenge with a 4 p.m. start. The Seahawks were last at the Green Terror Challenge in 2011, finishing third out of nine teams on the 5K course, eighth on the 3K course, and sixth out of seven eligible teams in the combined team standings.
WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY
When: Friday at McDaniel Green Terror Challenge at 4 p.m.
What you need to know: The women's cross country team has one event under their belts. The Seahawks opened up their season at the Salisbury Fall Classic this past Saturday and finished fourth in the team event. Sophomore Kara Taylor (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) finished ninth individually in 24:00.90 to register both the best finish and best time by a Seahawk at the Fall Classic. St. Mary's will now have the week to prepare to head out to McDaniel for the Green Terror Challenge on Saturday. At this event in 2011, the Seahawks second out of seven teams in the 5K race, eighth out of nine teams in the 3K race, and fifth out of six teams in the combined team standings. Racing begins at 4 p.m. this Friday.
When: Wednesday at Randolph-Macon at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday at Bridgewater (Va.) at 12:00 p.m.
What you need to know: The field hockey team split their season-opening games, posting a thrilling 2-1 overtime win over Goucher to open action at the brand new Jamie L. Roberts Stadium Complex Turf Field before a heartbreaking 1-0 loss to Stevenson. St. Mary's will spend the week in Virginia as they travel to Randolph-Macon on Wednesday and then down to Bridgewater on Saturday. The Randolph-Macon Yellow Jackets opened up with a 2-0 win over McDaniel this past Friday. The Seahawks have outscored R-MC, 13-2, in their last two meetings. After the midweek game, St. Mary's will head further south in Virginia to face Bridgewater. The Eagles dropped their season-opener, 5-0, to No. 6 Christopher Newport on Friday. St. Mary's will look to avenge a 4-1 loss from last year this Saturday.
When: Saturday and Sunday at Riley Cup at Old Dominion and Men's Single-handed Southern Qualifier and Women's Dinghy Opener at Navy
What you need to know: Both the coed and women's sailing teams are bringing back key sailors from last year's squads, including Honorable Mention All-American Crew Lydia McPherson-Shambarger (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck), and will be looking to improve upon their national finish this year. On the coed side, this past spring the Seahawks finished 14th at the Intercollegiate Sailing Association Gill College Sailing Coed National Championship. This will be the first weekend of racing for St. Mary's!
When: Wednesday at Washington College at 7 p.m., Saturday vs. Virginia Wesleyan at 2 p.m., Sunday vs. Bridgewater (Va.) at 4 p.m.
What you need to know: The men's soccer team recorded draws against Moravian (1-1) and Hobart (0-0) this past weekend at the Elmer Lord Classic hosted by Salisbury, to start the season 0-0-2. St. Mary's has three games this week, with a game at Washington College on Wednesday night and then hosting the two-day Seahawk Classic on September 8-9. Washington College is currently 2-0 following wins over Stevenson and Hood this past weekend while Bridgewater is also undefeated with season-opening victories over Bethany (W.Va.) and Sewanee. Virginia Wesleyan has opened up 2018 with losses to Pfeiffer and Greensboro at the Joe Pombriant/Christopher Newport Classic. The Seahawks beat Washington College (1-0) and Bridgewater (2-1) last fall but have not played VWU since 2015.
When: Wednesday vs. Eastern Mennonite at 4 p.m., Saturday at Stevenson at 4 p.m., Sunday vs. Hood at 12 p.m.
What you need to know: Like men's soccer, the Seahawks also have three games this week. St. Mary's suffered two tough, season-opening losses at Randolph-Macon (2-0) and McDaniel (1-0). Ready to put this past weekend behind them, the team is exciting about playing their home-opener on Wednesday against Eastern Mennonite at 4 p.m. before hitting the road for an in-state clash at Stevenson on Saturday at 4 p.m. The Seahawks have a quick turnaround; hosting Hood on Sunday at 12 p.m. EMU split its first two games of the season, defeating Marymount (Va.) before falling to North Carolina Wesleyan. Stevenson and St. Mary's have started the season same – 0-2 and goalless while Hood had its season-opener at Frostburg State cancelled and then fell at Mount Aloysius, 2-1. St. Mary's and Eastern Mennonite will be playing each other for the first time ever while the Seahawks suffered a 1-0 setback at Stevenson last fall. The Seahawks are meeting Hood for the first time since 2011.
When: Tuesday vs. Lancaster Bible at 7 p.m., Saturday vs. Eastern Mennonite at 12 p.m., Saturday vs. McDaniel at 4 p.m.
What you need to know: The volleyball team will be home at the Michael P. O'Brien Athletics & Recreation Center Arena for all three of their matches this week. On Tuesday, the Seahawks begin the home portion of their schedule against Lancaster Bible at 7 p.m. before hosting a tri-match with Eastern Mennonite and McDaniel on Saturday. First-year outside hitter Taylor Wigglesworth (Gambrills, Md./Arundel) led St. Mary's offensively this past weekend at the Virginia Wesleyan Invitational, helping the squad to a season-opening 2-2 mark with 2.67 kills per set.
