St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) kicks off their annual canned food drive this Saturday, November 11 in conjunction with the Capital Athletic Conference's yearly Food Collection Challenge.
The CAC Challenge concept was initiated by the University of Mary Washington SAAC leadership in a challenge to the other conference members at the organization's Fall 2010 conference meeting. Each participating school can pick any 10-day period between October 1 and Thanksgiving Day to collect food for a local charity.
This year, St. Mary's 10-day period falls between Saturday, November 11 and Tuesday, November 21. The committee will be accepting food collections as well as monetary donations ($1 = one pound). Collection boxes can be found at the Michael P. O'Brien Athletics & Recreation Center and at the Campus Center.
Another opportunity to help St. Mary's be the best in the CAC will be at Saturday's swim meet as well as the seven home basketball games (Nov. 15, 17-19). To check out the start times for any of these upcoming events, go to www.smcmathletics.com.
There will be a box set up in the spectator area of the Aquatics Center if you'd like to support St. Mary's food drive. In addition, fans attending any of the basketball games next week will be admitted for FREE if they bring at least two (2) canned food items per person. If you don't have anything in the house or don't have time to go shopping, there will be cash donation boxes at the ticket table and concession stand.
During the past six years, the Seahawks have raised over 3,600 pounds which has benefited the Food Pantry at St. Cecilia's Church in St. Mary's City. The Food Pantry provides, free of charge, groceries for people who live south of Hermanville Road in Lexington Park.
Help us make the push to be the best in the Capital Athletic Conference and help those less fortunate!!
