Top News of the Week 

Men's basketball improve to 6-1 at home
The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's basketball team put an end to their four-game slide with a 75-59 home win over Southern Virginia University (Jan. 14). First-year guard Matt Ayoub (Fairfax, Va./W.T. Woodson) helped St. Mary's in the win with a game- and season-best 19 points on 6-of-9 shooting, including a trio of triples, while grabbing a season-high four rebounds, too. This was Ayoub's seventh straight game scoring in double digits. The Seahawks will look to make it six home wins in a row on Wednesday, Jan. 14, at 8:00 p.m. when they host York College of Pennsylvania to the Michael P. O'Brien Athletics & Recreation Center Arena for the second half of a Capital Athletic Conference doubleheader. 

Women's basketball picks up win over Southern Virginia
The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's basketball team moved into a two-way tie for sixth place in the Capital Athletic Conference standings with their 77-65 victory over Southern Virginia University (Jan. 14). Senior center Nina Haller (Chevy Chase, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) averaged a double-double for the second straight week as Haller tallied 13 points and nine rebounds at No. 6 Christopher Newport University (Jan. 11) and then recorded 14 points and 14 boards against Southern Virginia. Junior guard Olivia Nowlin (Glenelg, Md./Glenelg) also played well for the Seahawks with a season-best 16 points against Southern Virginia. 

Swimming to host Mary Washington
Senior captain Matt Walchuck (Middletown, Md./Middletown) and sophomore Hailley Baughman (Lineboro, Md./Manchester Valley) led the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's and women's swim teams against the University of Mary Washington (Jan. 14). Walchuck collected a pair of first-place finishes in the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle while Baughman notched St. Mary's highest finish against the 21st-ranked Mary Washington women with a second-place finish in the 200 breaststroke. The Seahawks will be off for two weeks before traveling to the Eastern Shore on Saturday, Jan. 28, to take on Salisbury University in the regular-season finale at 1:00 p.m.
