St. Mary's City, Md. – Senior captain Gillian Sawyer (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake) was voted as the St. Mary's College of Maryland Athlete of the Month for the month of September. The award winner is selected by the Department of Athletics & Recreation management team.
A 5-7 forward on the Seahawks women's soccer team, Sawyer picked up this month's award after tallying 19 points (nine goals, one assist) in eight games. She notched at least one point in all but one contest while netting two of the team's four game-winning goals.
Sawyer set the school's all-time record for most goals in a career with a two-goal performance at Stevenson University on September 10. Her two goals put her ahead of Christa Childers '02, who scored 36 during her four-year career (1998-2001). For her efforts, she was named the Capital Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week on September 12.
She scored a season-best two goals in shutout wins over Washington College (Sept. 7), Stevenson, and Penn State Harrisburg (Sept. 24).
Sawyer currently ranks second in the conference in goals (10) and third in points (21).
The Seahawks (6-4, 3-0 CAC) are in action Friday, October 7, as the team hosts Marymount (Va.) University in a league matchup at 4:00 p.m. in Seahawk Stadium.
