St. Mary’s City, Md. – The St. Mary’s College of Maryland Department of Athletics & Recreation celebrated Cinco de Mayo last night in style with their annual Athletic Awards Reception, honoring the top student-athletes for the 2014-15 academic year as well as recognizing those student-athletes that have made a valuable contribution to the department.
Next year’s SMCM Student-Athlete Advisory Committee Executive Board was announced as well while the night culminated with the traditional presentation of the Athletic Highlights Video and Senior Waves, which were filmed and edited by senior Jenahye' Johnson (Randallstown, Md./Seton Keough) and juniors Jess Konecke (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard) and Gillian Sawyer (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake).
SAAC President’s Award: SAAC President Olivia Edwards (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) presented this year’s award to sophomore Zach Rowe (Annapolis, Md./Calvert Hall College), a second baseman on the St. Mary’s baseball team, for his positive energy and feedback as well as his unwavering support for SAAC’s initiatives.
SAAC Award: Edwards then presented future SAAC President, junior men’s cross country runner Greg Mainolfi (Lutherville, Md./Towson), with this year’s honor for his endearing dedication, enthusiasm, and passion to SAAC and the campus community.

Solomon’s Cup: A program designed as a friendly competition between sports teams to increase varsity athlete attendance and participation in various areas in the St. Mary’s College of Maryland community.
- Women’s Soccer won the Solomon’s Cup this year, snapping the men’s and women’s cross country two-year win streak.
SMCM Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award: Awarded annually to the senior female student-athlete and the senior male student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade point average.
- Senior field hockey goalkeeper Kelly Shuman (Columbia, Md./Atholton)
- Senior men’s cross country runner Tim Carey (California, Md./Leonardtown)
SMCM Rookie of the Year Award: Given annually to the female athlete and the male athlete who, in the opinion of the department, achieved the most in athletics in their first year at St. Mary’s.
- First-year women’s basketball and women’s lacrosse player Kerri Kline (Hagerstown, Md./Saint James School)
- First-year men’s soccer forward Alessandro Burlew (Mount Airy, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel)
SMCM Athlete of the Year Award: Given annually to the female athlete and the male athlete who, in the opinion of the department, achieved the most in athletics during the academic year.
- Senior field hockey and women’s lacrosse player Christy Bishop (Glenwood, Md./Glenelg)
- Senior men’s basketball guard Nicholas LaGuerre (Baltimore, Md./Lansdowne)
Athletic Director’s Award: This year, Athletic Director Scott Devine bestowed his award on senior Christy Bishop. Devine said Bishop was a true representative of the liberal arts through sport, embodying what it means to be a St. Mary’s student-athlete through her eclectic, unique, positive, upbeat personality. Devine talked about Bishop’s leadership qualities and how she always put the team first. It is a rare individual who can play two sports at the college level, and on two different sides of the field (goalie in field hockey and attack in women’s lacrosse), and collect all-conference recognition in both.
