St. Mary’s City, Md. – The St. Mary’s College of Maryland Department of Athletics & Recreation held its annual athletic awards reception Tuesday night, honoring the top student-athletes for the 2013-14 academic year as well as recognizing those student-athletes that have made a valuable contribution to the department this year.
The 2014-15 SMCM Student-Athlete Advisory Committee Executive Board was also announced while the night culminated with the traditional presentation of the 2013-14 Athletic Highlights Video and Senior Waves filmed and edited by junior Jenahye Johnson (Randallstown, Md./Seton Keough).
SMCM Athlete of the Year Award: Given annually to the male athlete and the female athlete who, in the opinion of the department, achieved the most in athletics at St. Mary’s.
- Senior RHP Sam Beatty (Columbia, Md./Hammond) of Seahawk baseball
- Senior forward/center Sophie Pruden (Carrboro, N.C./Chapel Hill) of Seahawk women’s basketball
SMCM Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award: Awarded annually to the senior male student-athlete and the senior female student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade point average.
- Senior Andrew Gear (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) of Seahawk men’s tennis
- Senior midfielder Claire Kortyna (Pittsburgh, Pa./Pine-Richland) of Seahawk field hockey
SMCM Rookie Athlete of the Year Award: Given annually to the male athlete and the female athlete who, in the opinion of the department, achieved the most in athletics in their first year at St. Mary’s.
- First-year 2B Zach Rowe (Annapolis, Md./Calvert Hall College) of Seahawk baseball
- First-year dual-sport athlete Brady Wolf (Reisterstown, Md./McDonogh School), member of both the Seahawk field hockey and women’s lacrosse teams
Athletic Director’s Award: This year, Athletic Director Scott Devine bestowed his award on senior goalkeeper Kelsey Wirtz (Parkton, Md./Hereford) of the Seahawk women’s soccer team in recognition of her inspirational comeback from an early season ACL tear to leading the team to a 5-2 record in the last stretch of the season.
2014-15 SAAC Executive Board: President – Olivia Edwards, Jr., Field Hockey (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand); Vice President – Brad Dioguardo, Jr., Baseball (Owings Mills, Md./Franklin); Secretary – Morgan Lempke, Jr., Field Hockey (Easton, Md./Easton); Treasurer – Matt Carney, So., Men’s Lacrosse (Alexandria, Va./The Potomac School) and Greg Mainolfi, So., Men’s Cross Country and Men’s Tennis (Lutherville, Md./Towson); Ad Hoc – Matt Braun, Jr., Men’s Soccer (Bowie, Md./DeMatha Catholic)
SAAC President’s Award: SAAC Co-President Katherine Schaffer (Ellicott City, Md./River Hill) presented this year’s award to junior Morgan Lempke (Easton, Md./Easton) for stepping up and helping to make SAAC’s numerous community service projects a raging success.
SAAC Award: SAAC Advisor Stephanie Guzzo presented SAAC Co-President Katherine Schaffer (Ellicott City, Md./River Hill) with the award for her invaluable contributions to SAAC and Seahawk athletics over her four-year career.
Solomon’s Cup: A program designed as a friendly competition between sports teams to increase varsity athlete attendance and participation in various areas in the St. Mary’s College of Maryland community.
