St. Mary's Moves Up One in All-Sports Award Standings

2010-11 CAC All-Sports Award (Winter Update)

York, Pa. — University of Mary Washington, which last won the CAC all-sports trophy during the 2004-05 season, boasts a double-digit lead over five-time defending champion Salisbury University, heading into the spring season as teams battle for the 2010-11 Richard C. Cook All-Sports Award.

The Eagles, who won both swim championships and finished first in the women’s basketball regular-season standings, erased a seven-point deficit versus Salisbury from the fall sports standings and totaled 91.00 points after 10 of the 19 CAC championship sports.  It was the 21st-straight CAC women’s swimming championship and 11th-consecutive men’s swim title.  UMW is also in first place in the Commissioners Cup standings for women’s sports with 54.50 points.

Salisbury enters the spring season with 80.50 points in the overall Richard C. Cook All-Sports standings.  The Sea Gulls are also second in the Women’s Commissioner’s Cup standings with 47.00 points and third in the Men’s Commissioners Cup standings with 33.50 points.

York College of Pennsylvania, which won its first-ever CAC women’s basketball championship after finishing third in the regular season, is third overall in the Richard C. Cook All-Sports Standings.  The Spartans, who registered a third-place finish in the men’s basketball regular season and a second-place finish in the men’s swimming championship, leads the battle for the Men’s Commissioners Cup with 37.00 points, just one-half point ahead of Mary Washington.

With 2010-11 championships in men’s soccer and women’s basketball, YCP has won two CAC championships in the same academic year for the first time since the first year of the CAC - 1991-92 - when the Spartans took home the trophies in baseball and men’s track & field.

St. Mary’s College of Maryland became the sixth member to win at least one championship in the 2010-11 season.  The Seahawks, who are in fourth place in the standings for all three awards, captured the regular-season and postseason title in men’s basketball for the second-straight year.  SMCM is just 5.5 points behind York in the all-sports award standings, 1.5 points behind Salisbury in the Men’s Commissioners Cup chase and one-half point behind York in the Women’s Commissioners Cup standings.

Frostburg State is solidly in fifth place in the all-sports standings with 50.00 points, with the other four teams packed in a bunch seperated by just 10.5 points.  Marymount, which moved up three positions in the All-Sports Award standings during the winter season, is currently in sixth place with 37.00 points, followed by Stevenson (34.50), Wesley (33.00) and Hood (26.50).

All five teams, including Frostburg State, are within 1.5 points of each other in the battle for fifth place in the Men’s Commissioners Cup standings.  In the women’s standings, FSU has 37.50 points and within 2.50 points of York and St. Mary’s while Marymount (24.00), Stevenson (23.00) and Wesley (20.00) are locked in battle for sixth place.
