156 St. Mary's Student-Athletes Honored as CAC All-Academic Team Members

York, Pa. – St. Mary’s College of Maryland led the Capital Athletic Conference for the fourth consecutive year with 50.6 percent of its student-athletes earning a berth on the 2010-11 CAC All-Academic Team as announced by CAC commissioner, Tom Byrnes, Thursday afternoon.  Student-athletes in one or more CAC championship sports that attain a 3.20 grade point average for the academic year are rewarded with a spot on the CAC All-Academic Team.

More than a 1,000 student-athletes representing nine member institutions and 19 championship sports were named to this year’s All-Academic Team.  It is the fifth straight year the league has tallied at least 900 student-athletes on the All-Academic Team and the first time totaling at least 1,000 members.  Five schools totaled at least 100 student-athletes on the All-Academic Team – the highest total in CAC history.

Sam Burum Kyle Jarczynski St. Mary’s finished third with a 156 total student-athletes in 15 sponsored championship sports on this year’s All-Academic Team – an increase of nine from last year’s squad.  Over the past two years, SMCM has added 24 student-athletes to the All-Academic Team, going from 132 in 2008-09 to 156 this year.

Eleven Seahawk student-athletes finished their career as four-year members of the CAC All-Academic Team while seven student-athletes posted a 4.0 GPA for the 2010-11 academic year.  Men’s basketball players, Sam Burum (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman), the 2010-11 CAC Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year, and Kyle Jarczynski (Bel Air, Md./Calvert Hall), were both four-year All-Academic Team selections and posted a 4.0 GPA this year.
