Cameron Hedquist

St. Mary’s City, Md. – For the third consecutive month, a St. Mary’s College of Maryland swimmer has been named Athlete of the Month.  This time, it was Cameron Hedquist (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg) of the Seahawk men’s swim team picking up the honor for the month of January as voted on by St. Mary’s Department of Athletics & Recreation.  This is Hedquist’s second career selection.

The freestyle/individual medley specialist helped the Seahawks to a program-best 12 wins, including their best Capital Athletic Conference record ever of 5-1.  St. Mary’s finished atop of the conference standings for the first time in school history, sharing top honors with University of Mary Washington and York College of Pennsylvania.

Hedquist was a double winner in four of five meets as the Seahawks notched a 3-2 (2-1 CAC) record in the month of January.

He started the month by capturing the 100 and 200 freestyle events in a 104-81 victory at Division II Florida Institute of Technology on January 11.  Hedquist followed with first-place finishes in the 200 and 500 freestyle races in a double-dual meet with Frostburg State University and Mary Washington on January 13.

The 5-10 junior notched a pair of third-place finishes against No. 5 Johns Hopkins University on January 20 before claiming gold in the 100 and 200 freestyle events in a 126-79 triumph at Salisbury University the next day.

Hedquist owns the second best time in the league in the 100 freestyle; the third-best time in the 200 freestyle and the 200 individual medley events; the fourth-best time in the 500 freestyle; and the fifth-best time in the 50 freestyle and 100 backstroke events.

The Seahawks will be back in action this weekend, February 17-19, at the 2012 CAC Men’s and Women’s Swimming Championships as St. Mary’s College of Maryland is the host institution.
