Andrew Gear

St. Mary’s City, Md. – Andrew Gear (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill), a member of the St. Mary’s College of Maryland men’s tennis team, earned his first career athlete of the month honor as Gear was named the St. Mary’s April Athlete of the Month by the Department of Athletics & Recreation.

Gear led the Seahawks to a 7-4 (4-2 CAC) record during the month of April, including helping St. Mary’s to the record-breaking 13th win of the season as the team defeated Lancaster Bible College, 9-0, on April 25.  The 6-2 first-year posted a 10-1 singles mark; including an undefeated record of 10-0 at No. 2 singles.

He started the month with eight consecutive victories, extending his match win streak to 14 in a row.  Those eight wins in a row included a pair of three-set triumphs such as Gear’s 6-3, 2-6, 11-9 victory at No. 23 University of Mary Washington.  His only loss of the season came on April 18 in the semifinals of the Capital Athletic Conference Championship Tournament as he played at No. 1 singles.

Gear notched an 8-3 doubles record at the first doubles flight with partners Arvin Wong (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) and Jay Guzzone (Columbia, Md./Hammond).

Gear capped his rookie season by being selected as the CAC Rookie of the Year and the St. Mary’s Male Rookie of the Year.  He earned first team All-CAC in singles as well as second team all-star honors for doubles.  Gear finished the season with a 19-2 record for a .905 win percentage, including an undefeated 7-0 record in conference play.  He also had a successful doubles campaign, tying the season record for doubles wins of 12.
